Anybody can apply to join. Members are of all ages, from all walks of life, and of any ability from expert to beginner. You don't have to be particularly fit, nor strong, nor heavily-built - the gun after all does all the work. Shooting is one of the few individual and team sports where men and women compete together on equal terms.
There are two categories of membership. Full Members can use all Club facilities, while Bisley Only Members can use the facilities at Bisley only. The difference is due to the running costs of maintaining a Central London Rifle Range.
Due to the redevelopment of the building which housed our previous range, in the spring of 2008 we were obliged to move to our current home at Blackfriars. It was decided that, for 2008, in view of the disruption of the move, all members would pay the same (lower, Bisley-Only) rate, whether they were Full Members or Bisley Only. For the same reason, the normal joining fee was waived whilst we re-established ourselves in a new City home. This we have now done, and the temporary waiver will apply only to applications for membership received prior to 1st November 2008.
We need an original signed application form, photographs, a copy of an identification document and references. Prospective members should be aware that we are required to forward the names and addresses of all applicants to the City of London Police.
The references are firstly a responsible person (solicitor, doctor, JP, bank manager etc) who is unrelated to you and has known you for at least 2 years, and secondly someone who is a member of the club. If you don't already know a member, (and most applicants don't), when you come to the club, ask one of us to sign your form.
Here's what you have to do.
Ask for an appointment to come and meet us at the club. See the contacts page. We will then provide you with an application form and give you directions. We usually organise an evening for potential new members at the beginning of each month.
We will show you round (you aren't allowed to shoot until you are a member) and make sure that you know what we can offer. Your application form can then be sent off to the membership secretary with your cheque for the joining fee and your first year's membership fee.
Once the Police check has been completed (which may take some time) your probationary membership card will then be sent to you and you are then free to use the club. On your first few visits you will be briefed on safety and firearms handling, and shown how to shoot.
Provided that we are happy with your progress and attitude to safety, you will normally be admitted to full membership 6 months later. For experienced shooters who already hold a firearms certificate, this period may be reduced substantially.
